Jethro
Last week, we dealt with the story of Cain. Cain was far away from God. God came to him but Cain refused to embrace grace. It appears that in his mind, he believed that his way was better. We ended our story last week with Cain in misery, maybe in time it changed. The Scriptures do not tell us. This week, we consider a man from Midian named Jethro. No, this one never had a TV show, and this one, it appears, is very wise, unlike the Jethro from TV fame. Jethro is a distant relative of Moses. Midain was a son of Abraham and Keturah (the wife that Abraham took after Sarah died). In general, the Midianites were not worshippers of the one true God and were often enemies of Israel. We are not positive of Jethro’s spiritual condition at the time that he encountered Moses, but his response to the work of God through Moses demonstrates to us the reach of our Lord.
